So you want to bet on football? Well, you are far from alone my friend. Here is some common knowledge and maybe some helpful pointers to help you beat your book this coming football season.

There are a number of ways that you can wager on a football game. Some offer low risk with low payouts while others offer high risk with high payouts. We will explain each below and expand fully on the topic. Enjoy!

THE POINT SPREAD

The most common method of football betting. You usually lay 11 to win 10 unless you are playing at a reduced vigorish sportsbook which offers you the ability to risk less to win the same amount.

THE MONEY LINE

This type of bet eliminates the point spread and results in either laying more money on the favorite to win less or laying less on the underdog to win more. This bet is based on odds, not a point spread.

TOTALS (OVER / UNDER)

These wagers have nothing to do with spreads or money lines. This bet is specific to the total points scored by both teams. You can bet over or under the total and expect to lay 11 to win 10 in doing so.

PARLAYS

If your a small player looking for a big payout, than this is the wager for you. You can lay as little as one dollar and get a huge payout. The problem is that you have to bet two or more games and every one of your selections has to cover against the spread "ats". Even one loss puts your parlay card in the trash can.

TEASERS

These bets are similar to parlays in that you have to bet 2 or more games and they all have to cover ATS. These wagers differ because you can add or subtract points from the point spread. If you are a player who is constantly losing by a point or two than maybe this is a wager for you.

PLEASERS

This type of bet is like a parlay but it has way higher payouts and is much harder to win. Not only do you have to win all your games, you are doing just the opposite of a teaser in that your giving away points instead of receiving them. This is a wager that is only recommended for the most astute gambler.

PROPOSITION BETS

These bets are mainly for fun unless your super sharp and can find value in the matchups the books are offering.

FUTURES

These bets offer you the ability to pick a team to win the AFC Championship, NFC Championship, Super Bowl or if a team will go over or under the posted season total wins.
